An Analysis of the Physical Properties of Recovered Cca-treated Wood from Residential Decks
نویسندگان
چکیده
A large volume of CCA-treated wood removed from residential decks is disposed of in landfills every year, and better environmentally conscious alternatives are needed. Recycling CCA-treated wood from the decks could be a feasible alternative, but there is a lack of knowledge regarding the physical properties of the material. This research analyzed the chemical and mechanical properties of spent CCA-treated wood from residential decks to evaluate the material for reuse in other applications. Several of the joists and the decking of removed decks were found to be below the originally stated retention level. The joists had higher retention levels, and length of service was not a factor in level of chemical retention in the decking or joists. The spent decking had similar stiffness properties, but the bending strength was lower than recently treated material. As with the chemical properties, the mechanical properties were not affected by the amount of time the deck was in service. Overall, it was found that the preservative retention properties were lower than expected, the stiffness was equal to, and the strength was lower than, recently CCAtreated wood. This does not indicate that the material is unusable, but aids in determining suitable applications where recycled CCA-treated wood can be used.

Spent CCA Treated Wood from Residential Decks can be a Resource for Reuse and Recycling
The volume of CCA treated wood being disposed of in landfills is growing at an alarming rate. In order to reduce the demand on landfills and timber harvest, more environmentally responsible alternatives for spent CCA treated wood have to be addressed. The objective of this study was to determine feasible products that can be produced from CCA treated wood. Several products were produced from CC...

Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treated wood has been most widely used in North America since the 1970s for many exterior applications such as decks, fences, playground equipment, utility poles, and others. A large volume of CCA-treated wood is currently coming out of service. Traditional disposal methods such as landfilling and incineration are not without adverse environmental outcomes. Recyc...
متن کاملRelease of arsenic to the environment from CCA-treated wood. 1. Leaching and speciation during service.
Insufficient information exists about the speciation of arsenic leaching from in-service chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated products and the overall impact to soils and groundwater. To address this issue, two decks were constructed, one from CCA-treated wood and the other from untreated wood. Both decks were placed in the open environment where they were impacted by rainfall. Over a one-ye...
متن کاملEnvironmental Impacts of CCA-Treated Wood Within Florida, USA
Studies in Florida, USA, focusing on the environmental impacts of wood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) were initiated because of elevated levels of arsenic and chromium encountered in ash from wood cogeneration plants within the State. During 1996 it was determined that these elevated levels were due to contamination of wood fuel with discarded CCA-treated wood. Since this time, a ...
متن کاملLong-term soil accumulation of chromium, copper, and arsenic adjacent to preservative-treated wood.
Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treated wood has been used extensively in outdoor applications, ranging from fence posts to decking and wood foundations. CCA treatment provides long-term protection for wood because chemical reactions that take place during treatment fix the preservative elements in the wood. However, varying amounts of CCA have been reported to leach from the wood (Lebow 1996)....
